Referendum #1
 Passed with 99% of Vote.

Whereas, the Algonquins of Greater Golden Lake being comprised of Algonquin family units have occupied and been connected to the Algonquin Territory since time immemorial, and

Whereas, the Algonquins of Greater Golden Lake are a component of the Algonquin Nation that has been formally seeking justice in relation to our Algonquin Aboriginal Rights and Title since at least 1772, and

Whereas, the Algonquins of Greater Golden Lake Lands Claim Committee did receive a mandate from the membership at the Community Meeting of May 5, 2001 as follows:

“MANDATE:” - To consult and receive direction from the identified Algonquin/Nippissing People within the region of Greater Golden Lake on all issues pertaining to the Algonquin Land Claim, with the focus toward an Agreement in Principle with Canada and Ontario. and

Whereas, the mandate was further amended at the Community Meeting of August 9, 2001 as follows:

ADDITION TO MANDATE” - To hereby approve, empower and support the Algonquins of Greater Golden Lake Land Claims Committee to:

A} to serve as an interim political government body.

B} to perform all duties of a political government body {includes enacting and passing ALL LAWS and BY-LAWS pertaining to the Algonquin Negotiation Process}.

C} to enter into holding agreements for specific lands located in our land claim Territory.

          D} to put forth our collective positions as one recognized community within our land claim base.

E} to always keep in mind that our future generations are our future. and

Whereas, the Algonquins of Greater Golden Lake did enter into a political accord on March 6, 2002, with Antoine, Ardoch, Bonnechere, Mattawa and Sharbot Lake, known as the “Algonquin Nation Tribal Council” (ANTC), and in that accord it is agreed that:

“Be it finally resolved, that the ANTC seek renewed political mandates from each of the regions as soon as
 practically possible under the new structure.”

Therefore be it resolved, that by acceptance of this Resolution (Referendum #1), that the following be further added to the Mandate:

           -F) to realize that the family unit is the basic unit of our nation and is entitled to protection by the nation.

            -G) to strive for equality for all Algonquins in all aspects.

Be it further resolved, that the Algonquins of Greater Golden Lake further amend the Constitution and By-Laws to finalize and affirm our Algonquin Aboriginal Rights to Self Government as a First Nation, and:

That the “Algonquins of Greater Golden Lake”,
                be known as the “Algonquins of Greater Golden Lake First Nation”.

That the “Lands Claim Committee”, be known as the “Council”.

That the “Committee Representatives”, be known as “Councilors”.

That the “Secretary/Vice Chair”, be known as the “Vice Chief”.

That the “Chairman”, be known as the “Chief”.
