Not all band members
want representation by chief, council
Letter to the Editor - The Eganville Leader - April 10, 2002
I am writing this letter to correct some statements made by the chief in the-story "Chief wants land claims negotiations to continue" which ran in the April 3, 2002 edition of the Leader.
There are several statements made by the chief in that story that I question, but I will only respond to one of those issues here. In the story, the chief states that the council represents the I,875 band members and that this is a fact they do not dispute.
This is not true.
I am a band member and there are 81 other band members who have signed representation forms which state specifically that they do not wish to be represented by the chief and council and that they do wish to be represented by the Whitney, Madawaska and Sabine committee (WHIMASAB) in the land claim negotiations process.
I know. that there are other band members out there who also do not wish to be represented by the chief and council at Golden Lake but are struggling to find common ground that will permit them to proceed to an Agreement-in-Principle.
